When you picture a sunflower, think of Taiyo (Japanese for "sun"), a Japanese heirloom with a tall stem and large, vibrant yellow-orange petals around a rich chocolate center. Popular in Europe since the 16th century, sunflowers symbolize the sun god Inti of the Incas. While we no longer worship the sun, sunflowers still remind us of summer and warmth. Their seeds are a favorite among birds—just let the flower dry or cut it and let the seeds mature to attract many birds to your garden.
